Dr Patricia Porter – Learning Expert
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a learning expert?
Well, I’ve been a learning expert for many years, during my 30-year teaching career I specialized in diagnosing children’s learning needs and finding ways to help them learn, but I started working with parents several years ago, after a defining moment in my career.
I picked up the phone one evening and heard someone sobbing, when the sobbing subsided I heard someone say “ I can’t do it anymore, I just can’t do it anymore”.
The person on the line was a mother who had been to one of my workshops. When she calmed down she told me that she was spending hours every night trying to help one of her daughters do her homework and she had had enough. She could no longer work all day, support her family in the evening, and spend hours every night trying to help her daughter with her schoolwork.
She was asking me for help.
What could I do? I had to find a way to get her the help she needed.
I had been trained in how to diagnose children’s learning problems so that I could tell teachers how to help children learn. I had never worked with a parent before, and I wasn’t sure I could give her the help she needed. But I decided to give it a try. I assessed her child’s learning needs and recommended ways she could help her daughter do her homework, ways that meant she was not spending hours every night.
The next time this mother called it was to say that her daughter was making good progress with the tutor, and that family life had become much less stressful now she knew exactly how to help her daughter. She was delighted with the changes.
Soon I had many more families calling me for advice on how they could help their child become a better learner. I worked with many more families and I realized that I had a system that I could share with any parent who wanted to know exactly how they could provide the help their child needed.
As a result I have dedicated the rest of my professional life to helping parents understand their role in their child’s education, and how to match the support they offer to their child’s specific learning needs
Who do you work with?
I work with parents, normally parents of children aged between 7 and 14, who understand that their child needs their help to succeed in school and who want to know exactly how they can help their child reach their learning potential.
That said most of the parents I work with have concerns about their child’s learning. They want to know why their bright child is struggling to learn, and exactly what support he or she needs to overcome their learning hurdles and reach their learning potential.
What do you mean by Learning Potential?
We all know children who ‘could do better’, whose report cards never seem to reflect their ability to learn. These children are underachieving, doing less than is expected of them. These are the bright students who are of becoming better learners once we discover what is holding them back. A child reaches his or her learning potential when their ability to learn is being fully realized, when all obstacles to their learning are overcome. I believe that children can reach their learning potential if they know how to learn and are taught in the way they like to learn.
How are you different from other educational consultants?
I believe that YOU have the power to help your child become a better learner and succeed in school.
Well informed parents make the difference between a child who struggles to learn, and who may never reach his or her learning potential and a child who is an eager, happy student, ready to succeed in school and in life.
Because of this I give you the information and advice you need to choose the best way to help your child become a better learner. I give you the information you need to make the decisions about your child’s education that will lead to their success.
I tell you exactly how your child learns and how you can help your child become a better learner.
I believe that you, the parent, know your child better than anyone else and that you have an enormous influence on your child’s education, and, given the right kind of information, you can use this influence to ensure that your child gets the opportunities that lead to learning.
Who do you work best with?
I work with parents who are willing to take responsibility for ensuring that their child gets the learning opportunities they need both in and out of school.
My programs are created for parents who are willing to take a serious look at what they need to do to help their child learn and who are willing to take the action needed to support their child’s education.
They are created for parents who want to help their child learn in the most effective and efficient way possible and who are willing to rethink how they get involved with their child’s education.
I work best with parents who understand that their child needs to develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime and that the only way this will happen is by making learning enjoyable by making it rewarding.
When children meet learning hurdles they can lose confidence in their ability to learn and may even stop learning as a result. Parents can do something about this, they can ensure that children the skills they need to
What is expected of me when I work with you?
My programs are interactive. I provide you with the means of sending me the information I need to assess your child’s learning style and learning skills.
I send you easy to understand checklists to complete and, once you send the results back to me I create a step-by-step action plan of proven, practical ways that you can use to help your child reach the learning goals you have set for your child.
Every action plan is unique and specific to you and your child’s learning needs.
But that is not all, I am here to offer support as you learn new ways of helping your child learn.
Who will this program NOT work for?
I do not work with parents who are not willing to take on the responsibility of ensuring that their children get the education they need and deserve.
My programs are designed for parents who are willing to rethink how they help their child learn, and who are willing to take the actions necessary to ensure that they get involved in their child’s education in ways that make a difference
If you are unwilling to change the way you work with your child, or if you expect the school to be able to meet every one of your child’s learning needs, these programs are not for you.
What exactly is the 5 Step to Success System and what does it include?
Discovering your child’s path to success begins with having a clear understanding of what you want your child to learn, how your child learns best, and whether your child has the skills he needs to be able to learn quickly and efficiently.
Here’s how the system works.
You receive checklists and assignments that help you gather information about how your child learns. You use these results of the checklists to create your child’s Smarts Pie and Learning Profile.
When you have completed these steps you return this information to me and I draw your child’s Smarts Pie and Learning Skills Profile. Then when I understand how your child learns I create your child’s Path to Success, ways you can help your child learn more quickly and easily than ever before.
But I don’t stop there. In the last step of the system I show you exactly how to provide the support your child needs, how to lead your child to learning.
These five steps guarantee that you will be able to give your child the support he or she needs to reach his or her learning potential.
To review;
Step 1 – We help you create learning goals for your child, goals that help you know exactly what you want your child to learn so that you can measure your child’s success.
Step 2 – This is where you identify how your child learns. Using the carefully prepared checklists you create your child’s unique Smarts Pie.
Children learn in different ways, when you know how YOUR child learns you can you help him or make learning quicker and easier for your child.
Step 3 – More checklists! This time to check on your child’s learning skills, the skills he or she needs to be able to learn. When you have completed your child’s Learning Profile you understand why your child is underachieving, not getting the grades he is capable of.
Step 4 – You take a break, it is time for the experts to work. You send us the results of steps 1-3 and we review the information and create your child’s Path to Success, they help your child needs to become a better learner and succeed in school.
Step 5 – After an explanatory phone call we send you a list of the practical, proven ways that you can provide the support your child needs. Remember, these are specific to your child’s unique learning needs.
The whole process can take less than a week.
These are the steps of the 5 Step System for Success that I have created after working with many families over the last five years to help them support their child’s education.

Will I recover my investment?
Education pays.
It is lifelong learners, those who have the ability to adapt to changing situations that have the brightest future. And what do these people have in common? They love learning, they have the skills they need to be able to learn, they see life as an adventure not a struggle.
Your child’s future will be brighter for the investment you make today – something to think over.
