Obama Got Low Grades?: So What!

I have no idea whether or not President Obama did get low grades in school as some people seem to think – and say.  And I don’t really care.

But, just for a moment, let us imagine that it is true, that he struggled to get top marks in school and maybe even in University, that his grades were low, that his teachers never thought he would amount to anything, that he was just another kid trying to get through the system.

Something must have happened to change things!

Or maybe it was someONE.

President Obama spoke often about his relationship with his grandmother, and was visibly upset when she died.  Perhaps it was this special relationship that gave him the courage and ability to run for, and win, the leadership of one of the greatest countries in the world.  (Sorry people from the USA but I live in Canada and this is a great country too!)

What if it was his grandmother who instilled in him the feeling and the belief that yes, he could do anything he set his mind to?

What if his campaign slogan – Yes, We Can! – was based on this belief?

Now I know very little about President Obama’s parents so I cannot talk about how they influenced him, but I do know that his grandmother had an amazing influence on his life and the direction in which it has gone.

So what does it matter if he did not do well in school?  In fact if he really did get poor grades before he became President of the USA it is a testament to his tremendous ability to overcome initial obstacles and to reach his full potential.  I see the rumors of poor grades as enhancing his reputation rather than diminishing it.

But most of all I see his rise to power and fame as a testament to the influence of family, to the way family instilled in him the belief that he had the ability to change things.
