My learning journey – part 2

Today I had my second golf lesson. Ok, there was some improvement since last time because I had been practicing but not much. I still have a lot to learn!

In this lesson my coach, April, was getting me to feel when my swing was right. Seems that I flick my wrists and that is a no-no in golf. She spent a lot of time helping me hold the club just right, turn just so, and then control my swing. She did this by getting me to aim the club at a weed in the grass as I came to the end of my swing. It was hard work, and as soon as I lost concentration everything stopped working and the ball just trickled onto the grass.

April was trying to get me to’ feel’ when my swing was just right. We agreed that the aim of the lesson would be to help me know when my swing was wrong, rather than hitting wonderful shots. We would be spending lots more time on trying to get me to hit the ball well, but for now she wants me to be aware of what a good swing ‘feels’ like and to know when it feels wrong.

A few times I swung the club and it felt good. Sometimes the ball even went up in the air and it looked like a good shot. I think I learned what it should feel like, so I may be able to get that feeling back later.

When children are struggling to learn they don’t get the chance to know what it feels like to learn easily and well. They don’t understand the feeling of success and so they easily get discouraged and stop trying. Only when a child gets a glimpse of what it feels like to be able to learn can he or she begin to want to keep trying.

I spend a lot of my time helping children get that feeling, understanding that they can learn and that, with practice, they will learn. I do it by matching the support I give a child to their specific needs learning style and providing loads of encouragement and praise. It works like magic, children are re-energized and become eager to learn.

I am glad that I have a golf instructor who does the same for me!
